Columbia Memorial | Health Compass | Summer 2019

CMH sponsors events and organizations throughout the region to help promote wellness through nutrition, exercise, disease prevention, economic security and meeting basic needs. We hope to bring people together for a strong, vibrant community. CMH has supported Clatsop County Relay for Life, our local Relay for Life chapter, for more than 15 years with donations, an annual food drive that benefits the local food bank, and a team for the annual 24-hour relay walk that raises funds for the American Cancer Society and its research to find a cure for cancer. Here are some of the other ways CMH supports our community: Museum exhibit: CMH is currently sponsoring the exhibit “Held for Observation: The Evolution of Medical Care in Clatsop County” at the Clatsop County Heritage Museum. The exhibit will be up through the end of the year, and we encourage you to stop in. It will make you glad you are alive now and not 100 years ago! Great Columbia Crossing: The Great Columbia Crossing is a 10K run/walk across the Astoria-Megler Bridge from Washington to Oregon. Proceeds from the race benefit the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce and help support community businesses through events and promotions. The CMH/ OHSU Cardiology Clinic has been the event’s title sponsor for several years. CMH caregivers are on hand every year to provide taping, first aid support, and health and wellness tips. This year’s race will be on Sunday, Oct. 13. Christmas food baskets: Last Christmas, CMH had the opportunity to take on the Astoria-Knappa Christmas Food Basket program, which works in partnership with the Astoria Wishing Bell program. It was a great success! During the project, caregivers volunteer to collect, sort and box up food for around 300 families in need. CMH caregivers are already looking forward to helping brighten our neighbors’ holiday season. COMMUN I T Y WE L L N E SS PA RT N E R S Supporting a strong, vibrant community Regatta: This year’s Astoria Regatta celebrates the festival’s 125th anniversary. CMH is involved in several ways. Three CMH caregivers sit on the Astoria Regatta board, including CEO Erik Thorsen, who is co-president. Caregivers from the CMH Women’s Center, Pediatric Clinic and Family Birth Center will wave from CMH’s float in the Grand Land Parade on Saturday, Aug. 10. Plus, CMH is hosting its second Regatta Square from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 10, on the 12th Street block between Duane and Exchange streets. It’s a street festival featuring live music, delicious and healthy food, a kids zone, and a health fair. The CMH Emergency Department Band will take the stage with their eclectic mix of rock, blues, bluegrass, folk and Americana. Medix Ambulance, the Astoria Fire Department and our local medical experts will also be there with information and resources to help keep you and your family safe and healthy. So come out and join the fun! OCTOBER 13 AUGUST 7–10 DECEMBER 2019 6 HEALTH COMPASS SUMMER 2019
