6 HEALTH COMPASS WINTER 2020 Susan Sims, RN, MSN, FNP-C Family Nurse Practitioner, CMH Urgent Care Susan Sims, RN, MSN, FNP-C, joined the CMH Urgent Care team in December 2019. After nearly 40 years as a nurse serving people across the country, Sims says she has worked with people of all ages and backgrounds. She lets her patients guide her understanding of what they need. Sims started her career in medicine as an RN in 1980. After working in clinic and hospital settings for eight years, she moved to Los Angeles to train to become a family nurse practitioner. Sims worked for the next 20 years in primary care clinics in California and South Carolina and also taught at UCLA and the University of South Carolina. “I really have a passion for travel, and after practicing a long time, I started being a traveling nurse practitioner six years ago,” Sims says. She’s worked in Idaho, New Mexico, Washington, South Carolina, Nevada, California and on the Oregon Coast. Last June, she decided to settle in Seaside and bought a home. Sims says she wants to get involved in the Seaside community. “I’m ready to have a life again,” she says. “You make a life wherever you are.” New faces in Seaside Emily Sullivan, PharmD Ambulatory Care Pharmacist, CMH Community Pharmacy Emily Sullivan, PharmD, came to CMH from Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. Her colleague, Rebecca MacNeil, PA, had practiced with the CMH/OHSU Cardiology Clinic for several years and told Sullivan that CMH was wonderful. Sullivan took a sabbatical last May and moved to Astoria to live with her now-fiancé, Ken. A few months later, she took a pharmacist position at the new CMH Community Pharmacy at Seaside. Sullivan is a board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist. She specializes in working with providers and patients to manage chronic diseases like diabetes. She looks at a patient’s needs holistically and may suggest solutions besides prescription drugs, like over-the- counter medicines, devices or community resources. “The beautiful thing about working in a system like CMH is that you have access to the medical records,” Sullivan says. “You have the information you need to make really solid clinical decisions.” Sullivan enjoys mountain biking and camping with Ken, playing with her two dogs, and reading— especially cookbooks. Terry Hollowell, MA, RN, MSN, CNL, FNP-C Family Nurse Practitioner, CMH Urgent Care Terry Hollowell, MA, RN, MSN, CNL, FNP-C, has lived in exotic locales, including South Korea, Costa Rica, Burkina Faso, Tanzania and Morocco. He decided to go into medicine while in Africa, where he worked as a writer with his identical twin brother. Like many, he started as a registered nurse before training as a nurse practitioner. “I went into nursing, rather than being an MD, because I like the flexibility of doing a bunch of things,” Hollowell says. Hollowell earned his master’s degree in nursing from the University of San Francisco and completed his nurse practitioner’s training at Indiana State University. He has worked as a nurse practitioner in family medicine, acute care and sleep medicine. Hollowell joined CMH Urgent Care in November 2019. “I always said I’d eventually go into urgent care or the emergency room,” Hollowell says. “I’m really excited about working at CMH. It fits every check box,” including living at the coast. Hollowell and his wife have two young children. In his free time, he enjoys camping, running, swimming, hiking and reading. He is proficient in Spanish and French.
